Glassy-eyed tourists falling over themselves down the Leidseplein may be a thing of the past, since the Dutch government voted last month to ban tourists from the country's coffee shops. For over 30 years, these shops, which are decriminalised zones, have been popular with those wanting to buy and smoke marijuana (e outras cositas más) freely, but authorities now want to cut down on drug tourists, calling them a "public nuisance". The ban will come into effect in the south of the country first, before heading for the city.
